Sequential Combustion Technology for Gas Turbine Power Generation with CO2 Mitigation

Future gas turbines must be able to offer technological solutions for the mitigation of CO2 emissions in power generation. Initial mitigation technologies will be based on either (a) post combustion removal with exhaust gas recirculation or (b) hydrogen combustion. The ALSTOM GT26, a reheat gas turbine with sequential combustion, offers an interesting platform for realizing these options. In (a) the main challenge is achieving stable and complete combustion at the highest levels of exhaust gas recirculation, where the oxygen excess concentration is small. Here tasks will focus on (i) extension of fundamental knowledge on combustion systems with low oxygen excess and (ii) enhancing combustion stability through in situ production of hydrogen. For option (b) the challenge is on understanding the effects of fuel reactivity on ignition delay times and thus, work will be aimed at creating reliable numerical models for predicting ignition delay characteristics. Based on these fundamental results a sequential combustor will be designed together with the industrial partner, providing a basis for future development of this key component for the ALSTOM GT26 machine.
