The purpose of this project is foremost to develop an extremely precise, ergonomic and affordable optical navigation system for general brain surgeries including precise biopsies of tumors and lesions, difficult craniotomies, and deep brain stimulations (DBS). The project will combine the 3D optical tracking expertise of Atracsys with the software design and development skills of the EPFL under the guidance of the neurosurgery department at the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV).In a second step, a further software module for very precise DBS electrode placement will be developed and integrated. It will allow placing needles for epilepsy or Parkinson treatments, and will also serve for other brain pathology treatments.
