The project aims at developing a novel titanium-based dental implant surface based on the presentation of bioactive ligands that elicit specific interface responses with a number of relevant cell types. Preliminary results demonstrate the feasibility of such surfaces to steer osteoblast cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation while at the same repelling bacteria. The study will comprise a matrix of interaction in vitro between synthetic peptides and four different cell types as well as five types of bacteria. In a second phase of the project, selected peptide-functionalized surfaces will be combined with a drug delivery system based on submicrometer carriers embedded and protected in the microstructured titanium implant surface for controlled release of bioactive species. Small animal studies for screening the osseointegration ability will complement the study. A specifically indicated application of the new implant surface will be for patients with immuno deficiencies (osteoporosis, diabetes).
