Telemetry requires laser pulses with short duration, well controlled transversal mode emission and high pointing stability. High pulse power is needed to enhance the range of the telemeter. The aim of this project is the realization of a novel concept of laser diode operation. The laser diode system will be based on commercially available diodes. External optical elements required to control the laser emission will be mounted with the TRIMO-SMD technique. The system will be short, in the range of a few mm, in order to allow for the fast build up time of the laser pulse. The new light source will be an essential part of range finder instruments, based on ¿Time of Flight¿ distance measurements with 1 mm accuracy, currently not yet available worldwide.
