Optical nano gratings and continous processing for improved performance flexible solar cells
Abstract
(Englisch)
The short-term goal of this project is to enhance the quality/price ratio of amorphous silicon solar modules produced by VHF-Technologies, which are at present deposited on Polymide (PI) substrates. - In order to increase the solar module performance, we propose to enhance the light trapping (and thereby also the photogenerated current) in solar cells, and improve the series connections and current collection in entire solar modules.- Module cost will be reduced in 2 ways: by using cheaper substrate materials (PET or PEN) instead of PI, and by using faster scribing methods to structure the solar modules (instead of the batch process presently used). To attain these objectives, we will rely on the following competence centers: - IMT, which has already demonstrated that it is possible to increase the photogenerated current of amorphous silicon solar cells with a periodic texture on PET: See the feasibility study/pre-project (FP) TNS 5810.1 (1st March-31st August 2002) and its continuation project (CP) (1st January 2003 -31st March 2003)- EIAJ, which has the competence to increase production speed with a competitive scribing method and the capacity to build an apparatus for Ag grid printing. The synergy between the 3 main partners (IMT, EIAJ and VHF-Technologies S.A.) is certainly a significant advantage of the present project. It is complemented by specific know-how brought in to the project by the ¿minor¿ partners: OVD and PSI. At the end of this 18 months¿ project, we are therefore confident that the modules produced by VHF-Technologies will reach 4% stable efficiency, in the production line, and that VHF can increase the overall production throughput of their solar cell ¿bands¿ from today¿s 24 m/day to over 200m/day.
