This project aims to assess the feasibility and application effectiveness of antimicrobial silver-silica nanopowders in polymer materials. HeiQ¿s silver-silica nanopowder represents a unique means of delivering silver metal into medically focused polymer and fiber applications. Material advantages include ease of incorporation, durability of effect, and strongly competitive pricing. Technical challenges to be addressed in this project relate to the incorporation of the nanopowder within various polymer matrices, characterization of the antimicrobial performance of the polymer composites, and assessing the influence of the additive on the polymer properties. The project partners offer expertise in nanopowder production (HeiQ), polymer compounding and plastic processing (INKA), fiber production (EMPA), and nanomaterial and biological research (HLS-FHNW). This highly focused and market-driven project represents an innovative contribution for effectively introducing a new silver-based antimicrobial additive into medical plastics and fibers.
