Automatic creation of application-specific functional units from the C source code of an application

Abstract (English)

This project will develop electronic design automation software tools which will help hardware designers in creating special accelerators for application-specific standard parts (ASSPs). Such hardware accelerators are in the form of application-specific functional units extending existing microprocessors; they increase the performance (speed or power) of the devices in specific applications. The challenge consists in completely automating some critical aspects of a burdensome and costly process; yet, the aim is also to provide tools which are visually and interactively rich to have designers retain full power on the design process and be confident in the results.
