Abstract (Deutsch)

It has been shown that handheld electronic diaries yield better data quality and more reliable results than traditional paper methods. This has proved to be an effective methodology for social science field research. A major difficulty has been the programming required. This onerous task has limited the use of these devices to major projects where these high initial costs can be justified. These considerations led to the development of a universal handheld electronic diary system 'IzyBuilder', now tested on Palm and Windows Mobile PC. Axiome, manufacturer of eBarman, an industrialised PocketPC, saw the potential of the technique developed for use as a general purpose handheld data entry method. This will allow Axiome to lower the initial entry costs and therefore make new markets accessible for eBarman. The current working eDiary prototype should be validated and extended to provide a complete single data entry mobile data collection solution for multiple handhelds connected to a web based server.
