System for Hyperthermia Cure of Neck and Head Tumors (HYCUNEHT)
Abstract
(English)
The objective is to develop a novel, next-generation system for regional hyperthermia to reliably control temperature elevations in cancerous tissues of the head and neck region with an innovative ring applicator and to ensure temperature levels remain below adverse effects for the surrounding tissues. The other innovative mainstay of this system is a user-friendly and comprehensive planning tool enabling physicians to perform routine, safe and effective treatment applications. These new technologies will be developed and commercially exploited through our expertise and pacemaker position in dosimetry and simulation methodologies. The clinical utility of the prototype will be assessed at one of the leading hyperthermia centers in the world. This first prototype enabling routine and effective applications of hyperthermia along with the recent data indicating the effectiveness of hyperthermia combined with other cancer therapies will bolster hyperthermia as an effective and widely ccepted/respected treatment modality for cancer. It will also mark the first milestone in the development of a commercial hyperthermia system by the industrial partner.
