Abstract

The purpose of the project is to design new oxynitride coatings M1OxN1-x and M2ySi1-yOzN1-z for Al-alloys die casting tools with reduced tools service failure and improved surface quality, both being key parameters for further production cost reduction. New monolithic and multilayer coatings will be deposited with arc evaporation and magnetron sputtering. Modeling heat conductivity, temperature dependence of mechanical properties, and diffusion will be performed. High-temperature phase stability, thermal conductivity, diffusion, and toughness will be optimized to provide at least 30% improvement in life-time compared to existing Balinit¿ CAST coatings. The list of planned technological tests includes thermal fatigue and Al soldering studies.
