Plants have been shown to be an economically viable alternative for the production of therapeutic recombinant proteins. A major obstacle is the non-human glycosylation pattern introduced by the plant N-glycosylation machinery, which can influence circulatory half-life, immunogenicity and biological activity. GlycArt Biotechnology¿s glycoengineering methods for mammalian cells will now be adapted to plants in collaboration with Dr. Kallio¿s group to engineer the plant cell glycosylation machinery to produce recombinant therapeutic glycoproteins with human-like carbohydrates.
