The goals of the project are the development of novel techniques for designing, performance prediction, building, structural monitoring and analysing the next generation of high performance sailing yachts (Alinghi America¿s Cup). This project will thus require a strong inter-disciplinary effort, combining research in the areas of experimental and mathematical modelling of the hydro and aerodynamic environment, research in the processing and joining of light and stiff composite structures, the development of structural health monitoring techniques, as well as video imaging for visualisation of sails and mast deformations in real-time. This part A deals mostly with the first point, modelling of the hydro and aero-dynamic environment.
