Abstract

In this project, the knowledge gained from previous fundamental investigations into natural lubrication mechanisms will be applied to the development of new surfaces for an artificial, low-wear hip-joint articulation device. The surfaces will be tailored, both chemically and topographically, to have an optimized interaction with tribologically relevant biomolecules in the synovial fluid. As part of this process, it will be necessary to identify which proteins/glycoproteins adsorb onto the artificial joints and determine the resulting wear and friction in the presence of these species.
