The goal of this project is to design and fabricate fully integrated high-speed gating and active quenching arrangements for single photon counting avalanche photodetector systems using a conventional CMOS process, and to demonstrate the operation of the prototype circuit by merging it with commercially available APDs (avalanche photodiode). The distinguishing features of the proposed design will be the compact and inherently robust integrated circuit solution which is optimized according to the APD characteristics, high immunity to device parameter fluctuations, and more effective cooling options compared to discrete circuit solutions. The integrated design of the biasing / quenching circuit will also serve as the key step towards the design and realization of APD arrays for advanced imaging and multi-channel applications
