FLEW : FATIGUE LIFE OF EDM IMPROVED MICROALLOYED WHITE LAYER (Folgeprojekt von 5475.1 )
Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Anglais)
The aim of the present project is to create new EDM machined surfaces by special discharges and powder suspended dielectrics and to develop the appropriate testing method. The improvement of the mechanical characteristics will be measured with a new fatigue testing apparatus being more representative of the real part sollicitations. This device is part of a new strategy of faster characterization of materials designed for industrial mold applications. Due to an innovative process of EDM with powder suspended dielectrics developed for an earlier CTI project (CTI 5475.1), it is possible to generate a micro alloyed white layer structure. After further quality improvement of this white layer by optimizing the discharge process in Mo/C nano powder suspensions, a breakthrough is expected. Progress in fatigue life, tribological properties and optical surface aspects will be quantified and compared to standard and very recent EDM machining data. These measurements will also enable us to benchmark these new surface properties with respect to those of conventional machining
