TCAD Based Optimization of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSEL-TCAD)
Abstract
(English)
Technology Computer Aided Design (TCAD) has become an established methodology for the design of edge-emitting lasers. Nevertheless major challenges remain unsolved for the application of TCAD in the design of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). In this project, new or improved models for heat transport, AC response, and noise will be established. Furthermore, current and future trends in VCSEL design will be addressed such as wavelength tunability and direct laser modulation at very high speed. The proposed work is based on the world-leading VCSEL simulator developed in a predecessor project by ETH Zurich and ISE AG. The driving force are the leading VCSEL manufacturers BeamExpress and Avalon Photonics, as well as the academic VCSEL activity at EPF Lausanne. As a result of the project, TCAD will be established in the commercial VCSEL design cycle. New and optimized devices will allow the Swiss VCSEL manufacturers to maintain their strong position and the new design methodology allows them to respond quickly on new market trends.
