The deployment of wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) systems has allowed for unparalleled network upgrading in network capacity and transmission lengths. As WDM technology advances towards ultra dense WDM (UDWDM) systems, a major problem identified is the high stability, narrow-linewidth and high power operation required from the WDM transmit-ters. Additionally, tunability of such transmitters across the entire C-band is of high importance, as it relaxes the demands for redundancy and installation overhead for the network providers, thus lowering the overall costs. The Project LASERLINE aims at developing a full C-band tunable, mode-hop free, high power, single-frequency ultra-narrow linewidth laser source for deployment in future UDWDM optical networks. The proposed optical source is based on a solid theoretical understanding and preliminary research activities show promising results. The laser source will be compact, rugged and low-cost.

As a result of this project, we have achieved a new laser source with the following main characteristics: - Narrow linewidth operation in the C-band - Mode-hop free tuning - Output ower exceeding 10dBm from the fiber output.
