The microclimate of caging systems for laboratory rodents such as top filter and individually ventilated cages is controlled and qualified using a novel laser spectroscopic technique. The concentration of different critical gaseous species is monitored continuously, so that the microclimatic conditions in different housing systems can be evaluated objectively and quantitatively with a great accuracy.

Abstract
(Englisch)
|
Individually ventilated cage system is a fairly recent housing system for lab rodents which has expended rapidly in animal houses without knowing exactly how animals adapt to this new cage environement. We have introduced a new technique, laser photoacoustic spectroscopy to measure microclimatic parameters. Measures concern ammonia, CO2, humidity, cage air renewal. With this extremely precise method, technical asessment of IVCs is straightforward. The technique is also very easy to used on-line and around the clock in running animal facility.
