Structuring the content of huge, rapidly growing genetic databases of molecular sequences according to the biological rules of evolution and phylogenetics, is a major scientific challenge. Phylogenetic reconstitution is a very difficult algorithmic problem which still requires fundamental research in computer science. Developments in other more or less related fields, such as clustering and classification, are neither entirely applicable in, nor easily adapted to this fundamental field of bioinformatics. Therefore, we are developing a radically new approach, An
âtaxis, which avoids the artefacts created by existing methods and will be capable of processing very large amounts of data.
