By investigating travel behaviour changes during specific life course transitions and by assessing their relevance to individual mobility biographies, our project aims to understand travel habits adaptation processes, so as to infer possibilities for sustainable policy interventions. This investigation builds on innovative survey methodologies, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches as well as the use of new automatic tracking technologies. Our projects consists of two complementary surveys: 1) LaSUR-EPFL has developed a survey design building on qualitative interviews and person-based GPS tracking units allowing the precise and complete reconstruction of individuals' travel behaviour and activity spaces. This innovative survey approach allows to investigate the interdependencies between actual spatial practices and travel mode use on one hand, and subjective attitudes, reasoning and competences on the other hand. By surveying people throughout the period of one of their life course transitions, it is possible to observe behavioural change and to comprehensively understand the underlying adaptation processes. 20 individual case studies have been realized and are currently beeing analysed. 2) IVT-ETHZ conducted a quantitative survey based on retrospective data collection, by way of 294 face-to-face interviews supplemented by a written questionnaire. Data has been collected about the mobility biography of the respondents (home and work locations, mobility tool ownership: car, cycles, season tickets, licences) as well as about the geography of their social networks. The analysis will develop models to characterise the driving forces behind the changes that occur throughout an individual's life course, with specific attention on the evolution of the geographies of individuals' social networks. The first analysis of the collected interviews and data showed interesting and reasonable results about social networks and the connection between social networks, mobility tools and mobility biographies.
