Wireless ad hoc networks are typically formed by a group of wireless devices without pre-existing infrastructure. The resulting ease of deployment makes ad hoc networks an interesting candidate for future wireless systems. Ad hoc networks have been subject to recent significant research efforts further fueled by the development of standards such as IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth. The requirements on future wireless (ad hoc) communications systems in terms of data rates and quality of service are several orders of magnitude higher than what is offered by current standards. The use of multiple antennas at the transmit and receive sides of the wireless link (multiple-input multiple-output or short MIMO technology) in combination with signal processing and coding has been recognized as a promising means to meet these requirements and provide broadband wireless access (BWA) with significantly enhanced spectral efficieny and quality of service. While MIMO wireless is fairly well understood in the case of single-user systems and point-to-point links, little is known about MIMO cellular systems. Ad hoc networks with MIMO capability have received even less attention so far. The common theme of the proposed research project is MIMO ad hoc networks with special emphasis on physical layer and link layer aspects. An important new aspect of MIMO ad hoc networks is the possibility to optimize the communication by cooperation between adjacent nodes. Central to the development of a framework for cooperative MIMO wireless networks is a communication theory that is tailored to distributed processing, and enables efficient, adaptive and robust communication within the network. Our focus will be on various aspects of channel modeling, network signaling and coding strategies, energy aware cooperative signal processing, and capacity characterization for ad hoc networks.
