Résumé des résultats (Abstract)

Objectives:
The combustion systems of low-grade biomass fuels suffer from the changing fuel quality. Namely water content and heating value change considerably. This causes insufficient flame stability and high emissions.
This project will take advantage of new clean combustion techniques such as flameless oxidation (FLOX®) and continuous air staging (COSTAIR). Both technologies are available for natural gas. These technologies will be enhanced by applying re-burning and co-firing.
Two basic types of BIO-PRO burners will be developed to meet this goal:
· A burner capable to burn gases as well as liquids;
· A burner to burn gaseous/liquid fuels in combination with solid fuels applying a pre-gasification step for the solids without cooling.
The new technology shall reduce NOx-emissions by 50% and reduce CO emissions to < 30 mg/m3.
The work programme:
Based on the waste materials derived from biorefinery processes the concepts of the two types of burners will be developed according to the fuel mix such as biogas, fermentation residues, fibres etc. First tests with the gas/liquid BIO-PRO burners will be done with the existing burner test rigs, the pre-gasification step has to be newly designed and built. A new control technology will be developed, incorporating a self-diagnosis module assessing online the fuel composition and an adoptive control loop. With this new control system a prototype will be built, tested, and optimised. Based on the results second generation prototypes will be manufactured and tested in a biorefinery environment under industrial conditions.
Expected Results:
The prototypes of the new burners will be brought to pre-commercialisation level. The accompanying socio-economic assessment will assess the economic viability of the new technology on the one hand and will show promising markets for a subsequent dissemination of the technology on the other hand.
