This study will focus on donation performances from the dead rather than from the living.
Traditionally, countries performances of donation rates in organ donation from deceased "donors per million population (p.m.p)". Whereas this method gives a crude comparison of performance between countries, this study aims to show a more accurate "donors p.m.p" calculation by looking at consistency in reporting standards and by using a "top down" and a "bottom up" approach (The Donor Action Methodology) to calculate a countries donation efficiency index
Abstract
(Englisch)
1. Summary

Every year thousands of people wait in vain for the transplant that could save or improve their lives. The situation is set to get worse as aging populations and improved medical care increase the demand for donation while the supply continues to decrease. Closing the gap between the demand and supply of organs for transplantation is a major challenge for health care professionals worldwide. This study looks at the current situation in Europe including Switzerland and focuses on individual country's organ donation performances and the factors which may impact on donation.

The following factors which could have an influence on a country's donation rates are taken into consideration to draft this report:
- potential for donation, based on WHO statistics on death rates for selected causes of death
- individual countries legislative polices
- organizational and professional education programs
- health-economic factors, included funding policies for donation
- socio-cultural & religious factors

Traditionally, countries performances have always been calculated by "donors per million population" (p.m.p), which leads to a rather crude comparison of performances between countries. This study has tried to estimate donation performances from the dead rather than from the living. To do so, two calculation methods were explored: a 'top-down' and 'bottom-up' approach, with a discussion about the relative advantages and disadvantages of both methods.

Collecting aggregated data from the Donor Action Medical Record Review, the bottom up appraoch in 10 countries has demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed measuring techniques.

The results have identified a huge potential for further expansion of the current donor pool in most European countries.
