Project aims
(English)
Main goal: Contribute to improve pastures and to adapt grazing system to become sustainable

In line with Medium-Term Concept 2003-2005

Niche approach – technological improvement/ research

Facilitating role in a multiple stakeholders set up

From pilot activities to up-scaling at policy level

Built in close cooperation with GoM policies and others donors' activities
Abstract
(English)
Degradation of pastures: around 30 %;4% v.severely
Causes mainly mankind: overgrazing (concentration of the 29.3 mio head of livestock) and unadapted grazing system
In located places, indispensable grasses population for pastures inexistent – irreversible
Increasing pressure on land (population growth: 1.5%)
Even if one of lowest density in the world (1.5 /km2)!
Very little scope for increasing productivity on this resource
Lack of alternative income generation activities
Transfer and application
(English)
Need for a multisectorial approach – mainly for water
Long-term commitment needed/
Governance aspects: role of local authorities
Change of social organizational behavior
Scientific knowledge is obsolete – long term training
Very much dependant on participation of local authorities and herders /power change
how to balance long-term benefits with short-term need with different interests at stake

Baseline missing
No consensus on state of degradation of pastures
What is the carrying capacity of pastures?
Opportunity to build capacity whilst implementing program, but difficult to select areas on absolutely objective criteria
