The world is in motion, and the demands on transportation systems grow ceaselessly: new transportation arteries, greater capacity for existing routes, enhanced security, extra comfort and ever-increasing speed. These are the demands that society expects to be met in order to deal with population growth and achieve economic ambitions. These social and economic goals demand engineering solutions. Political will and economic resources are essential, but in the end, engineers must translate these expressions of social will into effective structures. The 16th Congress of IABSE has focused on the challenge of integrating transportation systems within an urban environment. Technical sessions have examined existing, planned and visionary structural systems for land, air and water transportation, including the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of bridges, airports, harbours, terminals, railway stations and tunnels. A multidisciplinary analysis of structural, environmental, social, aesthetic, logistical and financial aspects has been provided.
