The objective of COST action 853 is to evaluate the potential of Microarray technology in diagnostics, large-scale-screening and breeding of agronomically relevant organisms. Since the launch of COST action 853 in 2002, we established a constructive web of contacts with scientists from 21 different coutries, a homepage to support these collaborations (http://www.cost853.ch) and a functional autonomous microarray-laboratory in Wädenswil. In 2006 we have organized a meeting in the Netherlands for the working groups 1 and 2 as well as the management committee of our Action, and a meeting in Switzerland for the working group 3. Furthermore, a STSM workshop on bioinformatics took place in Zürich after the WG3 meeting. In our laboratory, we evaluated the possibilities of a diagnostic array for agricultural relevant species of Tephritid and beneficial insects via our 'Gene Chip' approach and started with the production of a quarantine bacteria chip. Still ongoing is our project on an insect chip including quarantine insects as well as beneficial insects. In parallel, we are still working on our Genome Chip approach, which will enable us to characterize unknown species on the basis of random hits of short oligos on genomic DNA or cDNA. Contacts with the private company Nimblegen are established in order to achieve this project. A chip for rapid identification of self-incompatibility alleles of sweet cherry was also created for breeding purposes.
