Abstract
(Englisch)
International, interdisciplinary collaboration between paleoscientists and the climate modelling community is a vital prerequisite to achieving realistic annual to interannual climate predictions. Among the areas of paleoclimate research most relevant to the climate modelling and prediction are:
- Extending the instrumental climate record back in time with annually resolved, quantitative proxy data;
- Documenting and understanding rapid climate change events;
- Documenting and understanding natural climate variability during warm interglacial periods, including the Holocene, with background climatic states similar to those of today;
- Testing the ability of climate models to capture known past climate variability.

The proposed EURESCO series will address each of these key areas within the framework of two conferences: one concentrating on abrupt climate change dynamics and a second on climate variability in the North Atlantic, thought to be a critical region in the forcing of rapid climate change events associated with changes in the global ocean thermohaline circulation. This EURESCO series has been timed so as to complement a series of meetings, which have been planned over the next several years as part of the PAGES/CLIVAR Intersection program. As such it provides an opportunity for a strong European lead within a co-ordinated international effort to improve climate predictability.
