Abstract
(English)
'Molecular wires' are one-dimensional molecular systems that efficiently mediate electron transfer between spatially separated sites. This proposal is based on the use of molecular wires as key components in a bottom-up-approach to functional materials for opto-electronic applications.

The following steps are involved:
a) design and synthesis of suitable molecular wires;
b) characterization of the molecular wires along three main experimental lines: photo induced electron transfer in Donor-bridge-Acceptor dyads, fast electrochemistry of SAMs, electrical characterization of Metal-SAM-Metal junctions;
c) as a step from the molecular dimensions to the macroscopic domain, incorporation of molecular wires and dyads into conducting polymers and study of the new properties of the materials obtained;
d) development of proof-of-principle devices: switchable molecular wires, molecular light-emitting diodes (LEDs), polymer-based electro-optical devices (LEDs and transistors).
