Abstract (English)

The requirements of an information society present significant challenges to the privacy and confidentiality of personal information. The project aims to build a knowledge base, a set of standards and guidelines, which will inform and advise professionals and policy makers throughout the healthcare sector of the EC. The following are the principle objectives: to identify the principal issues and concerns in relation to confidentiality of healthcare information having particular regard for the requirements of vulnerable groups; to review and compare existing national and international law, policies and guidelines on confidentiality; to prepare European guidelines on confidentiality in healthcare; to distribute the guidelines to EU health professional associations, scientific societies and the appropriate government bodies; to establish a web page on confidentiality guidelines for healthcare professionals.
