Abstract (Englisch)

The proposed project has the main objective to nurture the concept of the European virtual Institute on Reference Materials and to develop it into a legally and financially independent organisation, which will successfully continue its mission, even when EC support has come to an end. The central mission of the proposed Virtual Institute is a knowledge Network and a facility to encourage the interaction between all stakeholders in the field of Reference Materials. This will include the users (such as the many industrial sectors, including SMEs, and government and research laboratories), producers of (C)RMs, service providers and the expert centres present in many European (EU and NAS) countries.

An important tool in the quality control of analyses is the use of (Certified) Reference Materials, (C)RMs, to test accuracy, validate methods and assure traceability and inter-comparability between laboratories. The central mission of the 'European Virtual Institute on Reference Materials' (VI-RM) is a knowledge Network and a facility to encourage the interaction between all stakeholder in the field of Reference Materials. The VI-RM shall become the meeting place for producers, distributors, users (including industry and SMEs), service providers, and research organisations in EU&NAS countries. The VI-RM will act both as glue (between Network Members) and grease to smooth dissemination, exchange of ideas and concepts. The project has the main objective to nurture the concept of a Virtual Institute and to develop into a legally and financially independent organisation.
