Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Anglais)
A ubiquitous computing environment is required to realise the Framework Six vision of ambient intelligence; in such an environment processors will be everywhere and will be interconnected by a diverse array of networks, from ad-hoc to the global Internet. Constructing the software infrastructure for the ubiquitous computing environment poses a number of scientific and technical challenges. A fundamental requirement is for middleware architectures capable of supporting services that are composable and adaptable.
The objectives of this Accompanying Measure are
(i) to create a research roadmap for the development of the next generation middleware capable of supporting services that are composable and adaptable within the context of large scale systems where quality of service issues ranging from fault-tolerance, timeliness to security and survivability are of paramount importance;
(ii) to build Europe wide partnerships for creating an integrated project for future work in this area.
Work description:
The consortium members will undertake an initial consultation exercise with the leading academic and industrial research groups on the subject area of the next generation middleware capable of supporting services that are composable and adaptable. Based on the exercise the consortium will organise an invited workshop on future research directions that will be held within the six months of the start of the MIDAS Accompanying Measure. MIDAS has already received a strong expression of interest in taking part in such a workshop from a number of organisations that include both SMEs and large-scale industries. Results from the workshop will enable MIDAS to organise a number of focused meetings on specific topics with the potential partners and help define the membership of the IP consortium and the structure of the IP. Within FP6, MIDAS is targeting the second Call with the expected deadline of summer of 2003. The main deliverables from MIDAS will be reports highlighting open research problems in the next generation middleware and possible technical approaches to solving those problems. These reports will form the basis of the proposed IP. The reports will be open and widely distributed and of interest to wider scientific community.
Milestones:
Consultation with scientific community on the structure of a workshop on the next generation middleware (Month 3)Holding of an invited workshop on the next generation middleware (Month 6)Publication of a preliminary research roadmap report (Month 9)Final research roadmap report (Month 12)The membership of the IP consortium and the structure of the IP on the next generation middleware defined (Month 12).
