Abstract
(Englisch)
Manipulation of individual atoms and molecules using the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) has now reached a degree of maturity such that it opens fascinating avenues of research in a number of scientific and technological areas. The present collaboration of 6 experienced groups from 5 different countries envisages the exploration of the most exciting applications of STM and AFM manipulations where molecules will be considered as functionalized nano-machines. More specifically, the objectives include:- the use of individual molecules as molecular robots- the use of STM manipulation as a nano-analytical tool- atomic and molecular manipulations on insulators and semiconductors for nanoelectronics- extension of current manipulation techniques to biological systems- theoretical modelling- further manipulation methods This program aims at developing the scientific and technological know-how essential to many other existing and future EEC programs in atomic-scale technologies.
