This CA aims to develop a framework for statistics on organic food production, trade and consumption in EU/EEA/CEE states, to meet market analysis needs of food producers, processors, distributors and retailers considering investments, and the need of regulators and policy-makers to monitor this rapidly growing sector including traceability issues and sustainability indicators. It aims to combine results from EU research projects (FAIR3-1996-1794 OFCAP, QLK5-2000-0l124 OMIARD and QLK5-2000-01112 CONVERSION), commercial market analyses and Eurostat 2092/91 data collection and to support improved data quality, standardization and detail on specific commodities. The aims will be achieved by reviewing existing data collection systems, producing a database and website, developing quality standards, conducting case studies in key countries and making recommendations for establishment and resourcing of a European Information System for Organic Markets.
Objectives The aim of EISfOM is to develop a network for reporting quality data on organic food production, trade and consumption in EU/EEA/CEE states, to meet the market analysis needs of food producers, processors, distributors and retailers considering investments/conversion, and the needs of regulators and policy-makers to monitor the impacts of this rapidly growing sector, including traceability and sustainability indicators.
The specific objectives are: a) to evaluate current data collection systems for organic and conventional markets and their potential for integration; b) developing tools and pilot data collection, processing and quality management systems for various levels and national conditions; c) to provide relevant recommendations to the EU in order to better prepare and support data collection; and d) to establish a database and website for organic market statistics.
