Abstract
(Englisch)
This proposal deals with the development of a technology for drug loading and a controlled release system on the surface of a metal implant. Five promising coating technologies will be examined in order to develop this loading and releasing technology. The research will be done on a generic surface and finally result in the development of a prototype implant. In Drugloresys a complex implant surface was chosen for this purpose, namely a stent to be placed in the vessel of a patient whose vessels are narrowed due to plaque. Vascular diseases are in 40% the cause of death in the EU, as the narrowing of vessels (restenosis) lead to heart attacks as well as strokes. A promising method to reduce the amount of restenosis would be a drug-coated stent, releasing drugs locally. The impact of a solution for local drug delivery in vascular diseases is high, but also the future application areas are most promising, such as oncology and diabetes as well as orthopaedic surgery.
