The overall objective is to develop mathematical tools that allow for the treatment of spectral problems arising in quantum mechanics or other physical problems treated by quantum mechanical methods. These mathematical tools - mostly from the field of partial differential equations and functional analysis - will be suitable for the description of high-dimensional physical systems.

This overall objective can be grouped into four sub-objectives which - although closely interrelated - structure the intended research:
1. Description of condensed matter from mesoscopic systems to statistical mechanics;
2. Understanding the stability and dynamics of infinite dimensional quantum systems;
3. Establishment of effective models as limits of fundamental equations;
4. Understanding linear and non linear aspects of the effective models.
