Abstract
(Englisch)
The Europractice 4 consortium CEMEMS offers development of Embedded MEMS solutions to SME users not specialized in MST/MEMS technologies. The consortium has unique combination competencies in MST/MEMS, electronics, mechatronics design and manufacturing and in marketing. Specifically the project aims at identification, and assessment of new major MST/MEMS applications, at lowering the entry barriers and increase confidence for new users not specialized in MST and at starting new major product developments. Activities include the development and the application new assessment tools, offering the full product creation process, and raising confidence through dissemination activities and demonstrators. It is planned to start 3 major product developments leading to a production of MEMS modules with a turnover of 10 to 20 Mio euro in 3 to 5 years. These key components are expected to sustain a business of 50 to 250 Mio euro/year.

Objectives:
This project provides services allowing industry to access Custom MEMS products in the form of complete subsystems, so called EMEMS: Embedded MEMS products. The consortium develops, promotes and offers the complete product creation cycle for EMEMS, starting from market needs, through commercial and technical product assessment, product creation plans, interdisciplinary product development to manufacturing. The targets are silicon based MST like optical mirrors, and shutters, used in medium volume (1000 to 1Mio pieces per year), added value products for industrial and instrumentation applications. They include printing, manufacturing equipment (e.g. for rapid prototyping, manufacturing of bio-chips), and telecom. The project aims at lowering the entry barriers for new users, increase the confidence level develop new tools for new product assessment and planning and at starting of 2 to 3 new major projects.

Work description:
The project pulls together a consortium of companies with different competencies needed to cover all the total solutions aspects including commercial/management as well as technical skills. It is composed of partners specialized in microsystems/ MEMS technologies (Colibrys, and Coventor), a marketing company specialized in MST (WTC) and partners with a broad base of additional technologies necessary for EMEMS (Helbling, Mettler). This Europpractice consortium is unique in that it combines expertise in MST electronic system design and manufacturing, product and innovation planning and market intelligence. CEMEMS offers the excellence to generate new end products sold at a hundred times of the price of the MST component. It provides a fully established supply chain for end-users of MST subsystems.

Tools for preliminary MEMS APPLICATION ASSESSEMENT establishment of MEMS MODULE PRODUCT CREATION PLANS will be developed and applied. The barriers to take-up of MST will be lowered by identification and assessment of new applications for MEMS solutions, identifying promising areas, contact key players to find out real needs and opportunities, and by showing potential customers how MEMS can improve their business perspectives. The confidence in MST solutions will be increased through dissemination activities, the product assessment and demonstrators. Proactive customer acquisition will lead to new applications and to start new projects in promising application areas, specifically in industrial sectors not usually associated with MEMS technologies.

Milestones:
2 to 3 product development projects with the following direct economical impact.
Income from product development: 4 to 10 Mio euro.
Production volume of the EMEMS subsystem: 10 to 20 euro/year in 3 to 5 years.
These new products will allow EMEMS users to sustain or develop new business between 50 and 250 Mio euro. The methodology for preliminary product Assessment and for Product creation plans will be available to the MST community.
