We propose to develop an energy efficient, optimised outdoor discharge lighting system for urban lighting. A set of interacting engineering design tools will be generated to facilitate total system design, to include lamp, ballast, remote control fixture. A novel dimming ballast with a digital control will be designed. A prototype lighting scheme will be installed in a city. Specific objectives of this project are: 60% reduction in energy consumption (operating costs); 30% reduction in maintenance costs; Substantial increase in luminous efficacy (+30%) and CRI (+40%); An advanced, centralised real-time control and monitoring network will be implemented in order to allow condition based maintenance for better reliability and higher availability of the lighting system. This telecommunication based system will be open for other added value city services, such as road accident detection and traffic monitoring. Initiate definition of IEC standard on electronic control gears for HID lamps.
