Abstract
(English)
Evidence is accumulating that all mammalian cells are responsive to even minor changes in oxygen tension. One consequence is that to obtain results of maximum relevance to in vivo biology, in vitro biological research should be carried out at physiological oxygen tensions and not at the unphysiological high oxygen tension of ambient air, which is the present standard. The majority of the EU research groups involved in this pioneering research and technical development will form a thematic network to benefit from their individual experiences. Furthermore, they will formulate guidelines for other researchers and in collaboration with SMEs make a first effort to stimulate industry to take advantage of this emerging market.
