Description succincte
(Anglais)
The first section of the project will focus on temporal aspects of malaria transmission, with the aim of building towards the development of malaria early warning systems. Temporal prediction of malaria risk will be attempted at sub-national level in an area where appropriate data are available. The second section will focus on spatial aspects, aiming to develop an accurate southern African malaria risk map. In this part the aims are to develop a spatial-statistical prediction of malaria prevalence through direct spatial modelling of MARA prevalence surveys; to apply transmission models to MARA survey data and thereby to translate prevalence rates into vectorial capacity and entomological inoculation rates for further modelling; and to validate existing malaria transmission models with data from southern Mozambique in order to render them applicable to the southern African context. The third and last section of the project will address the practical aspects of translating scientific results which are relevant to control-related decisions into a format that is easily accessible to control programme managers and policy decision makers at various levels. This chapter will document the application and relevance of an information tool called the MARA LITE that was developed to disseminate the outputs of the MARA project (including insecticide-treated net coverage) on spatial patterns of malaria transmission.
Objectifs du projet
(Anglais)
Development of malaria early warning systems for southern Africa; Development of a malaria risk map for southern Africa; the development of the MARA LITE information tool.
Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Anglais)
The project will (i) analyse temporal aspects of malaria transmission in southern Africa, with the aim of building towards the development of malaria early warning systems. (ii)analyse spatial aspects of malaria transmission in southern Africa in order to develop an accurate southern African malaria risk map. (iii) consider the practical aspects of translating scientific results which are relevant to control-related decisions into a format that is easily accessible to control programme managers and policy decision makers at various levels.
