Das Institut wurde 1999 gegründet. Es wird durch die Thurgauer Stiftung für Wissenschaft und Forschung unterstützt. Neben Grundlagenforschung betreibt das BITg auch angewandte Forschung, vor allem im biomedizinischen Bereich (Autoimmunkrankheiten, Rheuma).

Le BITg a été fondé en 1999 et est soutenu à travers la Fondation thurgovienne pour la science et la recherche. Le BITg est la première émanation de cette Fondation et travaille pratiquement comme un appendice de l'Université de Constance. Le siège du BITg se trouve dans un parc industriel nouvellement créé à Tägerwilen. A côté de la recherche fonda-mentale, l'Institut fait aussi de la recherche appliquée, en particulier dans le domaine biomédi-cal (maladies auto-immunes, rhumatismes).
