Der Projektname Livio 21 steht für "lightweight vision 0 for the 21st century". Das bedeutet, dass mit Hilfe des Livio 21 neue Wege zur Verringerung des Gewichtes von Automobilen erforscht wurden und werden sollen, ohne die auch in Zukunft hohen Anforderungen an die Sicherheit (Insassen, Fussgänger, Radfahrer, ...) zu vernachlässigen.
Konkret wurden im Projekt LIVIO 21 die folgenden Ziele verfolgt:
• Aufbau eines markenneutralen Autos zum testen neuer, in den Modul-Prototypen
erforschten, Lösungen auf der Strasse
• Erforschung neuer Technologien zur Herstellung von leichten Modulen für die
Automobilindustrie
Mit dem Aufbau des markenneutralen Basisfahrzeugs Livio 21 wurde eine Möglichkeit geschaffen neue, in den Modul-Prototypen erforschte, Technologien und Lösungen nicht nur auf Prüfständen in Labors, sondern auch im realen Einsatz auf der Strasse zu erproben. Zudem wurde für die Schweizer Forschungsinstitute und Industrie eine markenneutrale Plattform aufgebaut werden, um neue Ideen in wirklichkeitsnahem Umfeld zu präsentieren, ohne gleich ein ganzes (teures) Auto aufbauen zu müssen.

The project name LIVIO 21 stands for "lightweight vision 0 for the 21st century". This means that, with the help of LIVIO 21, new ways of reducing the weight of cars have been and still are to be explored without neglecting the high demands placed on safety (occupants, pedestrians, cyclists ...) which will continue to be placed in the future, too. The following aims were pursued in the LIVIO 21 project:
• Construction of a non-proprietary make of car for the on-road testing of the new solutions developed in the module prototype models
• Research on new technologies for the production of lightweight modules for the
automotive industry
With the construction of a non-proprietary LIVIO 21 basic vehicle, the possibility was presented of not only testing the technologies and solutions examined in the module prototypes on laboratory test facilities, but also of testing them in everyday use on the road. Moreover, Swiss research institutes and industry could be provided with a neutral platform on which they could present their new ideas in a realistic environment, without having to build a complete (expensive) vehicle themselves.
