COST-Action C10 - Outskirts of European Cities
Kurzbeschreibung

Abstract
(Englisch)
The research project observes the employment of the expression Glat(t)talstadt. Known since ten years now, it stands for a part of the northern periphery of the Greater Zurich Area that is exposed to a high pressure of economic development, mostly due to the proximity of the airport. It seems significant that this territory detaches itself more and more from the core city of Zurich. In this context we wonder whether the notion of town (Stadt) corresponds to this territorial configuration. The following questions are in the centre of our purpose: Who has invented the expression, who promotes it? In what context is it used? What are the values and intentions that are linked to it? Does it correspond with the economical, political and morphological reality? Is Glat(t)talstadt known by the population? Is there an Glat(t)talstadt identity? Is Glat(t)talstadt a toponym for daily life or a concept for insiders? Is there an interest of conceptualization in the discussion of urban designers? Can we compare its emergence with projects, such as Metropole Suisse or Helvéti-Cité? The research is organized by three different axes of investigation: 1. The use of the expression: Text analysis of specialized literature (urban design, spatial planning, governance), and daily press; 13 interviews with users and promoters of the word (urban designers, planners, architects, geographers, politicians). 2. The Name und daily life in Glatt(t)alstadt: 6 Interviews with inhabitants based on a indirect approach with 8 photographs of the territory. 3. Glat(t)talstadt and the contemporary discussion of urban design: Five experts are confronted with the results of the two first research axes and discuss the potential of the word.
