Iron and nickel complexes with sterically crowded bis-carbene ligands were prepared. The iron complexes rapidly hydrogenate unhindered double bonds, polymerize butadiene and oligomerize ethylene, whereas the nickel complexes turn out to be efficient ethylene polymerization catalysts. One of these nickel complexes reversibly binds molecular oxygen while undergoing a remarkable color change. The x-ray structures of these nickel complexes show a very surprising difference in coordination geometry.
