Abstract

Theme 1 - Dynamic Optimisation, Control and Performance Monitoring
The scope of the research is the development of new methodologies for optimal operation of batch and semi-batch processes through optimising control and multivariate and multiway dynamic performance monitoring. As opposed to the heuristic and brute force optimisation approaches used at present we want to explicitly utilise the wide range of process knowledge available together with modern system theoretical results.

Theme 2 - Modelling through Knowledge Integration and Model Maintenance
A software tool will be developed for the integration of the multi-faceted knowledge available in batch and fed-batch production. The integrated modular structure (and the software) to be developed will enable the implementation of a 'hybrid' process model. A methodology for experimental design and identification of non-linear processes will be developed. The model validation will be carried out in combination with parameter estimation. The issue of long-term viability of the models and model maintenance will be addressed.

Theme 3 - Spectroscopic Measurements, Robust Data Fusion and State estimation
Calibration models will be developed for estimating concentrations from measured absorbance or reflectance spectra. This is rather straightforward in the case of non-reacting mixtures, but much more difficult for reacting mixtures or multiphase systems since the presence of reactions introduces collinearity in the spectral data. Research will be carried out in the above mentioned disciplines as well as generic multiproduct and multiscale modelling.

ETH participates in Theme 1 with focus on Simulated Moving Bed Chromatography and Crystallization.
