Abstract
(English)
PART will provide better estimates of optical properties, number density, composition, and particle size of aerosols in the upper troposphere (UT) and lower stratosphere (LS), including cirrus. The knowledge gained will improve our ability to calculate the radiative forcing due to aerosol and ice components in the UT/LS and also our ability to predict stratospheric ozone. The project will describe the formation and development of aerosols in the UT/LS using a hierarchy of models.

New laboratory data on aerosol optical properties will be used to optimally estimate aerosol properties from existing satellite measurements. The improved observational data will be used to check the quality of the new aerosol parameterisations. Finally, sensitivity and scenario simulations with global General Circulation and Chemistry Transport Models will be performed.
