Stirling engines are ideally suited e.g. as residential cogeneration units, or for the conversion of biomass into electricity, thus to lower our dependence from fossil fuel.

However, the cost of presently existing regenerators, which need to be built with finely divided, regular matrix structures, set a major barrier to their wide-spread use.

Improved regenerators will be developed on the basis of new concepts, in an approach enclosing the theoretical study of the flow and heat transfer, the manufacture and their practical testing in 3 existing pilot units. Higher performances and lower fabrication costs will significantly augment the competitively of these engines, making their series production envisageable for many energy saving applications.
