Abstract
(English)
The fuel efficiency of gas turbine engines for aircraft propulsion and electrical power generation must continue to improve if the European gas turbine industry is to remain competitive. Gas turbine internal air systems are required for cooling highly stressed components and for preventing the ingress of hot annulus gas, but these system cost 6% engine specific fuel consumption (SFC). This industry led project targets a 1% reduction in SFC through internal air system optimisation. Rotating fluid flow and heat transfer data will be generated from engine representative experiments at the partner universities. This data will be used by the ten industrial partners to validate their predictive capability, and to optimise air system designs. Validated design tools will be exploited to reduce new product time to market. The optimised designs will be exploited to reduce SFC.
