In the years 2003 -2007, the project „Autonomous Energy Supply by Photovoltaics and Fuel Cell“ had the following focus: (1) Building up of more than several power supplies with a FC-system as back-up; (2) field tests with the FC-system of the new fuel cell SFC A50 R (Nr. 4) in the laboratory of the Swiss National Hydrological Survey (SNHS) of the Federal Office of Water and Geology (FOWG); (3) field tests in three sites under different conditions in Switzerland and one in Germany; (4) reporting of failures and problems in the field; (5) discussion for a collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences of Bern in Biel for a new hydrogen FC for continuos operations; and (6) contacts with users for water level measuring systems (2x) and the autonomous energy supply for telecommunication with the fuel cell SFC A50 in Germany and Austria. The power supplies with a high demand covered by the fuel cell had several severe technical problems. Together with the producer improved systems (in totale 4) would be delivered for tests within the Swiss National Hydrological Survey (SNHS) of the Federal Office of Water and Geology (FOWG). The fuel cell performed better and better, but still not as stable as needed. Only one systems for a telecommunication station in Germany performed well. But this system had a high coverage by the PV-system. Overall the FC-systems are not ready for a harsh environment. By low demand and severe temperature conditions and a good control and service the FC-systems can still be used. In the future the newest version of the SFC-FC-will be bought and tested for commercial applications. They have several promising improvements in the design. The SNHS decided to go ahead with this kind of autonomous power supply. In parallel they try to start a project with a hydrogen fuel cell. The basic units are tested at the University of Applied Sciences of Bern in Biel. Within the project the demand for such systems would be checked. It seems that in the overall market the demand for such systems is rather low. More chances can be fount in special applications as water level systems and small telecommunication systems.
