Abstract

Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) is a 'living' polymerization mechanism, which allows for the preparation of well-defined polymeric structures with narrow molecular weight distribution. When ATRP initiators are introduced onto surfaces, surface-tethered polymer chains can be obtained and form films covering the original surfaces. We have optimized this process to obtain films that cover surfaces a) in a conformal fashion, b) in a water-based environmentally friendly process, c) with polymer chains of ultra-high molecular weight, resulting in thicknesses up to more than 50 microns. These films are of interest in biomedical applications for their perspective resistance to shear stresses.
