Abstract
(Englisch)
This proposal aims to set-up a thematic network for the evaluation and comparison of the alternative long-term strategies for the management of long-lived radioactive waste that have been considered in the EU member states and applicant countries. The focus would be strategies for the management of spent fuel intended for direct disposal, long-lived ILW and HLW generated from reprocessing and transmutation. Additional nuclear materials, e.g. U or Pu stocks, not currently classified as waste, would also be considered. Delegates from a cross-section of European countries, including applicant countries, would be brought together in a forum for discussion promoting the exchange of information and expertise.

National differences influencing strategy selection and the key drivers in the formulation of national policies would be reviewed, with the aim of reaching a common understanding of the differences in current strategies.

1. To provide information, on the major issues associated with a number of alternative waste management strategies for long-lived radioactive wastes, so that the key issues in a range of countries can be readily assimilated by policymakers, those that implement policy and members of the public.
2. To evaluate and compare alternative strategies for the management of long-lived radioactive wastes, taking into account regional differences.
3. To provide a forum for discussion and the transfer of information, enabling the participants from a cross-section of European countries, including applicant countries, to reach a common understanding of the rationale for existing and proposed waste management strategies.
